The High Plains Museum is hosting a scavenger hunt today March 22nd, tomorrow March 23rd and Saturday March 24th!  There are three different themed hunts that are all unique.  It is a great way to spend part of the day with your family or a group of friends.

At the museum we have a small research library that contains books on museum topics, items in the museum, and books that relate to Sherman County history.  The history books range from Custer, to the railroad to life on the plains.  One book however that caught my eye was Courtship Letters of John Bruere and Lydia Miller 1888.

On September 21, 22, and 23, 1886 Sherman County had its first fair! It looked different from the fair we know today.  They still had crafts, livestock, and agricultural products, but also had pony and horse races and a baseball game!

In 1887 there was a vote on which town should be the county seat.  The towns in the running were Goodland, Sherman Center, Eustis and Voltaire.  A first vote determined that Goodland would be county seat, but after debate and accusations that the election was decided before a vote could take place, fighting broke out.  What happened Read more…


Sherman County has had many men and women serve in the military.  Veterans in Sherman County range from the Civil War to Iraq and Afghanistan.  In the earlier years men formed veteran groups and women form auxiliary groups.  In town we have the V.F.W. and a memorial at the cemetery.
